WORK4RRS: A Manager's Toolkit of strategies for improving rural and remote workforce sustainability

Global shortages of health workers continue to impact access to health services for people living in rural and remote areas.

Our collaboration of researchers, health professionals, HR practitioners and managers are seeking evidence-based organisational strategies to improve rural and remote health workforce sustainability.

Strategies for improving workforce sustainability are essential.

Our team brings a breadth of experience to consider the challenges associated with retention and unwanted turnover for rural and remote health services. We are driven to work collaboratively to find out what works!

The WORK4RRS Toolkit

The WORK4RRS Toolkit contains strategies to improve workforce sustainability that have been implemented in rural and remote health organisations. Some of the initiatives have been evaluated as well. We call the strategies that appear to improve workforce sustainability promising practices.

We will continue to add to the promising practices as more evidence is available.

“Members of the current remote health workforce, experienced remote health professionals who know the landscape, propose that future health workforce sustainability is achievable with effective management practices focused on people, practice and place.”

— Onnis, 2016.

The WORK4RRS Toolkit contains resources for improving workforce sustainability.

The WORK4RRS Toolkit was developed through a research project collaboration as a first step in collating resources about what works in a range of rural and remote contexts. Finding out what works is important to our team.
